Measurement of Urban Heat islands (UHI) within the BE READY project

Weather stations in Ratiboř

Within the framework of the Be Ready project, which is supported by EU funds, two weather stations are located in Ratiboř, which continuously record air temperature, rainfall and humidity. These weather stations also measure wind direction and wind speed. The information, which is continuously transmitted to the web application, will be further used and evaluated in the framework of this project.

Thermal camera measurements

Additional data is collected by means of a thermal imaging camera, which can be used to measure the temperature of various surfaces. This is one way to check for extreme overheating of surfaces in the municipality. Overheated surfaces in the settlement are common in the summer, even on days when there are no extreme tropical days and the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute does not report warnings of high temperatures.

Heat islands in municipalities are usually found in places that are built-up, impermeable (asphalt, concrete) and have no elements in their vicinity to provide cooling of surfaces - shading or humidification (e.g. greenery).

In Ratiboř, the heat island is the intersection in front of the municipal office, which consists of the road, the bridge over the Ratibořka River and the adjacent sidewalks:

At the beginning of August 2024, temperatures as high as 77.3 °C were recorded on the pavement, which is part of the heat island at the intersection in Ratiboř, during a typical summer day when no meteorological warning of high temperatures was issued...

UHI indoor bus stopThe surface in the shadow of the bus stop was up to 46 °C.

UHI stop uncovered... and the surface of the bus stop without shade was nearly 75°C.

The radiant heat from such heated surfaces is uncomfortable for people. Prolonged proximity to such heated surfaces has adverse effects on human health.
