On Thursday, April 23, an environmental program was held near the YMCA campground for 4th and 5th graders from Ratiboř Elementary School. The beautiful spring weather and sunny morning created ideal conditions for the event, which aimed not only to introduce the children to the local campground and the newly built fire pit, but also to expand their knowledge of ecology and show them how to treat nature with care and respect.
A total of nine stations with environmental themes were prepared for the children. The program at each station was led by members of the Plamínci team together with volunteers. The children were able to try their hand at proper composting, waste sorting, or estimating the decomposition time of various materials. There were also stations focused on critical thinking, where students solved simulated crisis scenarios or tested their knowledge by identifying plants. One of the stations was also dedicated to introducing students to benthic fauna—that is, aquatic organisms living on the riverbed.
For completing each task, the students earned letters for their eco-passport, which gradually led them to solve a crossword puzzle. Hidden within was the word “upcycling,” which the children immediately put into practice—they created original colorful keychains from bottle caps, giving old items a new lease on life.
For successfully completing all the stations, the children were rewarded with a well-deserved treat: roasting sausages over a communal fire.
Thank you to all the fourth and fifth graders for participating and giving it your all. We’d also like to thank the teachers for accompanying the students and for their cooperation, as well as all the volunteers who helped organize the event.
