On Thursday, March 19, we welcomed the arrival of spring at the YMCA campground together with the children from the Ratiboř Preschool, in the spirit of traditional Wallachian customs. The highlight of the program was the campfire and a tasting of treats that our ancestors used to prepare over it.

By the fire, the children learned simple yet all the more magical ways of preparing food. They tasted roasted apples and bread snakes, which quickly became the most popular treat of the day. They were also delighted by the chance to customize their treats to their own tastes—from sweet honey and plum jam to a more robust garlic spread.

After our shared snack, we seamlessly moved on to a discussion about folk customs associated with spring. We explored the tradition of erecting maypoles—why they are erected, what they symbolize, and what their significance was in the past. To help us visualize everything better, we picked up colorful ribbons, and the children enthusiastically decorated and erected their own maypole.

Our thanks go to everyone who helped organize this event. But above all, to the children from the Ratiboř Preschool for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and the joy they brought to the entire day. It was thanks to them that the spring celebration had that genuine, cheerful atmosphere.
